Declared and completed Salida (Start), 7 Mountain, Hagerman Pass, Crestone Peak, Salida. First leg to 7 Mountain was slow as I heard that 7U had landed at Baca Grande(aka Crestone, I will let him describe his interesting experience). I finally figured out that I should fly the east side of the Sangre de Christos. Got low and headed for JZ Ranch where I hit a boomer to 17,500. Rest of the trip was easy but flown conservatively for a 500k.

Declared 300k out and return flight Gross Res, Laramie, Gross Res. After a low tow to 7000ft Dick Hogue let me go in a 4kt thermal to 10,000 ft. I heard 8U , XL and BG well up the course at Poudre Canyon so I just pressed all the way with long glides under good cloud streets. It was relatively sunny out in the Laramie valley but a big overcast was moving in from the West, so I tried to stay connected with the clouds and cruised out and got my turnpoint. Turning to fly south again conditions looked pretty daunting and I elected to move a little bit more East and keep Owl Canyon as a bail out spot. I hit heavy rain which knocked me down quite a bit but on clearing this I saw an eagle circling and sure enough he was in a thermal which got me home. After completing my course I went back to the Twin Sisters and then Mt Eldorado for 63 bonus miles.

Declared: Poncha Ridge(Start) to Tennessee Pass to Valley View to Hagerman Pass to Salida (Finish). On the way from Valley View to Hagerman Pass (Leg 3) I actually crossed the Salida Finish Line. Made the last turn at Hagerman Pass but landed at Leadville. After the usual glorious up and down runs on the Collegiate Peaks and Northern Sangre de Cristos, approaching the last TP at Hagerman Pass, Colorado's two largest peaks, Elbert and Massive, have failed to do their duty. Landed at Leadville A/P. Note: if you labd there after hours, call 911 and the Sheriff's dept. will let your crew in through the locked gates.

Synoptic picture looked positive. Declared task to Tower north of Kimball (132mi), to Wray (123mi) and back to Boulder for 416 +- miles to break the Colorado State Triangle record. Alas, I landed at Greeley Weld on the way back at 6:51pm. The total achieved distance was 383.8mi, The highest point was 11,000ft with the lowest 5,935ft. The major factor was wind (mostly North at 15-20), a very slow first leg and again the wind on the last leg including getting stuck at Brush on the way home. FYI - They have a helicopter (!) parachute operation at Brush. The flight took 7:35 hrs from launch to landing.

Declared the task Boulder Hospital, Meyers, Crystal Lakes, Boulder Hospital for 184 miles. Had trouble getting west into the good lift and spent 1 1/2 hours thrashing around between Gold Hill and Kossler before finally making it to Niwot Ridge and setting out on course. Once underway flew mostly without turning 184 miles in 2:11 hours for an average speed around 84 MPH.

Declared a start point in the foothills NE. of Salida, to the Climax Moly Mine (NE of Leadville), a point South of Crestone Peak, a point just North of the Leadville Airport, then return to Salida for the Diamond Distance. The first leg was slow as the day was not yet going and I had a load of water. Southern turnpoint near Crestone Peak was in an area of lowered ceilings and overdevelopment, requiring a turn out to the center of the San Luis Valley to find lift. The day ended with strong streets in the Arkansas River Valley. Score includes 25 points for completion of Diamond Distance Badge.

3/15/2003 Ventus B 626 pts 231 sm
Declared Gold Hill, Poudre, Mt. Evans, Pinewood Springs, Kossler Lake (307km, 191 SM). Added Kossler, Buttonrock Dam, Kossler (40 sm) at the end for bonus points. Good early season day, with widely separated thermals, many strong, with few areas of big sink. Weak wave conditions developed by the end of the day. This flight completed Silver/Gold Duration, Gold Distance, Gold climb. Points: 191 miles declared x 3 = 573 x massive ventus handicap (.899) = 515 40 bonus miles x massive ventus handicap (.899) = 36 Badge leg bonus x 3 (duration, alt, distance) = 75 Total = 626

It sure was some work getting going and into the convergence lines today so 5:32 hours in the cockpit. Attached is my IGC file. It appears valid, and I made all the turnpoints. It is a bit congested around Gold Hill! I was glad I had made two starts, but I believe I was valid on the second, higher start anyway. I think SeeYou uses the last start, as in a contest. Not alot of turning, but not alot of speed either. I was in "don't blow it" mode from Mt. Evans onwards. Declared Gold Hill, the 10,711' peak several miles west of Crystal Lakes, a point on the ridge ESE of Mt Evans (near Meyer strip), Gold Hill. Tough getting started, making the jump from weak thermals to the convergence. Long stretches flown slowly, without turning, in the extensive convergence. This entry includes 25 bonus points as the Diamond Goal flight.

Day 6 of the SSB Dalhart Camp, Miller Field (25TS), TX. Declared a 300km Out and Return: Miller Field (25TS) to Liberal, KS (LBL) and back to 25TS. The day was blue with winds out of the south at approximately 10 to 15 kts. Everyone launched late due to the tow plane being in the shop and was not returned to service until the afternoon of 7/10. For this flight, I launched at approximately 3 pm CDT. From Miller, I slowly poked my way up Route 54 towards Liberal. I landed on the ramp at LBL 4 hours and 10 minutes later (approx. 7:10pm) after the day died and it became clear that a return to 25TS would not be possible.

Declared Gross, Poudre, Idaho Springs, Estes Park, Gross. The flight was basically along the Peak to Peak highway. Good lift band between 13 and 15K if you stayed close to the clouds on the west side. This was the same day that Bob Carl went south and flew to Crestone and back. Flight satisfied my Gold 300K distance.

4/12/2002 304CZ 107 pts 113 sm
Declared Bolder Hospital, ColWy, Meyer, Bolder Hospital. Lessons learned was to get up into the operating band. John Seaborn and Rob Patterson both flew the same route, but about 4,000 feet higher and had much better flights

4/17/2002 304CZ 83 pts 29 sm
Declared and flew a very short course trying to understand my new flight computer. Blazing fast speed at 25mph.
