ANNOUNCING WORKFEST 2002!
Spring soaring is just around the corner, and its time to think about Workfest 2002 and getting our club equipment ready for the record flights, badge attempts, and soaring camps coming up in 2002. As in the past, the Workfest will begin at 9AM, and end at 4PM followed by a barbeque/potluck cookout at the SSB grounds. Workfest 2002 is scheduled for 11 May, with a rain/snow date of 18 May. Some work, such as mowing and weed trimming, will occur on Friday 10 May. Other projects will need to be accomplished on other days as well if they involve outside services or vendors. Please submit your ideas to me for reasonable Workfest 2002 projects. Ship Managers, if possible, plan on heading up the team for your individual ship. Members, now is your chance to restore that favorite glider to pristine shape in time for that badge flight. We'll have classes at 9AM on washing, waxing, canopy polishing, tape residue removal and tape application. There will also be a few contests and surprises to enhance the work day. As a reminder, this is a No Fly day, and probably not the best time to wax your private ship. Don't miss this chance to give back to the club. Please send your project ideas to me via e-mail, or fill in the sheet located at the SSB Shack. I will then post the projects on the website in March, so you can sign up for your favorite task. It is this cooperative spirit that makes the SSB work and provides us with the opportunity to fly great equipment at affordable prices.

SSB 2002 Banquet
Time to kick off the 2002 soaring season with the annual SSB banquet. Jim Spellman has organized this event which will be held at the Boulder Cork.
SSB Annual Bird Closure
The annual flight restrictions over the Flatirons and other designated areas will be in effect from February 1, 2002 until July 31, 2002. All aircraft (gliders and powered aircraft) are required to be at least 1000 feet above this terrain when flying. These measures are necessary to protect the raptor resting areas. Refer to the Notices and Wildlife Closure links at the Boulder Municipal Airport web site for the most current information. The SSB also has a web page detailing these annual wildlife closures.
Spring Checkout Weekend - March 31 - April 1
There will be more instructors on the field than you can shake a control stick at so this is the perfect time to get this annual chore over and done with. Show up at the field ready to be put through your paces! It wouldn't hurt to call Bob Lynn or Mark Terry or Gary Baughman first to arrange a time. Both Towplanes will be in attendance, so all we need is a sacrifice to the weather gods and all will be set!
Spring Checkouts must be completed by April 30th or you will be grounded until you fly with an instructor. Don't let that happen to you! 03/22/01
SSB Wednesdays Are Back!

New Instructional Opportunities
Historically there have been two clear instructional possibilities available to club members on the field. (1) SSB member instructors flying with SSB members in club gliders (2) MHG instructors flying with SSB members in MHG gliders. The SSB Instruction Policy provides a clear third instructional option: (3) SSB members flying with approved MHG instructors in SSB gliders. SSB members can schedule time with any of the instructors on the approved list . The SSB Web site now features two pages related to instructors and instruction. The Approved Instructor list and the SSB Instruction Policy are on one page while an explanation of the new policy is on another. If you are a student or an instructor please visit these new pages. Note that SSB members are NOT normally permitted to take full basic training from Mile High Gliding instructors in SSB aircraft. 9/18/00
Salida Camp Serves Up The Weather - This years Salida Camp was a good one with two good flying days. Flights of over 250 miles were accomplished in some of the most scenic country Colorado has to offer. There were around 15 club related gliders flying. Many families and wives attended this years last SSB camp of the season. See this months newsletter for the details. See the photos. 9/6/00
Super Cub 85F Returns to Boulder
It is my pleasure to report that today, August 22, Rick Spears flew the SSB Super Cub 85F back to Boulder. The aircraft sports a new left wing, aileron, elevator and tail wheel assembly. The plan now is for Dakota Ridge to give the aircraft a very close inspection and to have Dick Hogue complete the final check flights this Friday. With any luck 85F will be towing again this weekend. If your a tow pilot thinking of checking out in 85F you should have received instructions on how to go about this checkout. The SSB Tow Pilots Manual will be mailed out shortly to tow pilots.
Special thanks to Rick Spears and Gary for doing such a great job on the repair and completing the job in record time. Phil Grandmason was a very large help in securing hanger access while the friends of the SSB at Tri-County Jack Horn and Kyle lent invaluable help after the accident. Dick Hogue played an important role with advise and logistics. In short bringing 85F back was a team effort in the best sprit of the Soaring Society of Boulder. 8/22/00
New SSB Towing Page -The new SSB towing page is your answer to the often burning question, " how can I get a tow?" This new page gives you a monthly towing schedule, information of the clubs crack tow pilots and the status of the clubs tow planes. Kenn Arnett, tow pilot scheduling guru is managing this page. Have a look... 8/21/00
Dalhart Camp Is a Winner! This years Dalhart camp was a big success by most accounts. While not as strong nor consistent as years past everyone who attended had lots of flying. Jim Spelman reportedly flew four hours in his Open Cirrus and while no distance records were broken many long flights were achieved. Dick Hogue provided the towing in 08L making over sixty tows. Our hats are off to Dick for is commitment and hard work during this camp. The weather was generally good with some windy days and some fair to mid range soaring days. Oak Smart, Gary Baughman, Ed Cook, Bob Whelan and many other SSB members attended. See the camp page.
New 01/02 SSB Managers Page - Go to Mangers Page
The SSB is quite fortunate to have a great group of volunteer managers already in place for the coming year. In most cases the current managers re-upped for the 2000-2001 (March to March) period. Thank you one and all! The best way to help the club is to become involved so take a look at the new managers page and volunteer. Many more names will be added after the March General meeting.
