SSB July 2005 Meeting Date Move!
SSB Members,
Due to the Dalhart camp, we will change the meeting date to the third Monday, which is 18 July. It should be a good meeting, with the topic of interest being off field landings.
The Dalhart Camp will begin on Saturday, 9 July, and run through Friday the 15th. With this in mind, we will be moving our July SSB meeting to Monday, the 18th of July, at the usual meeting location and times. We will discuss off field landings, and it should be an interesting meeting. We will also hear a report on the Dalhart camp, and hopefully some stories of long flights, badges, Texas sunsets, and good BBQ.
Your next SSB bill will include an updated membership roster, with email addresses and phone numbers. Please check your information and send any updates in your bill or just email me, and I will have Pat update our database. Thanks to Colin Barry for the formatting of the roster, which is designed to be folded and carried in your glider as a retrieve resource.
I'm sure most of you on the email list have read the letters from Elliot and Gunnar concerning attentiveness and timeliness when staging and launching at the busy Boulder Airport. It is also important to turn on the glider radio and build situational awareness about the traffic pattern prior to pushing out. Remember, with our limited landing options, it is critical to give the gliders in the air as many options as possible. Don't push out and force a glider to land in the dirt, or worse. As they said in World War 2, give the flyboys a break.
There is some increased interest in the SSB Youth Program, and I anticipate 2-3 new youth members joining our club in the near future. With my work schedule and other SSB duties, I don't have the time to run the youth program (or even fly gliders), so if someone is interested in creating and guiding this new program, let me know. Currently our youth enjoy reduced fees, but I believe they could benefit quite a bit from a little guidance, some responsibility, and the company of others their age at the airport.
Next year we will celebrate the 47th Anniversary of the Soaring Society of Boulder, and the fact that this club is still around is a tribute to the hard work of the many members and leaders that built our organization. We will have a number of board and officer slots opening up next year, so if you benefit from the services the club provides, consider serving on the BOD or as an Officer, and give back something to the SSB. We also will need an Equipment Manager, as Jon Held, our previous manager, will be away from Boulder for the next couple of years. Jon did a great job in his short tenure, and the next equipment manager will have the pleasure of overseeing the organization of our new shack. Construction is entering the final phase, and I know the club will benefit greatly from this improved building. If you are interested in this position, let me know.
Fly safe, and fly often,
Bill Hoadley
