Farfunglide is a traditional SSB event where members fly as far as possible away from Boulder airport. A semi desirable trophy is awarded to the winner.
Date: Friday May 28, 2004
Goal: Sidney, Nebraska
Details:
This year we will hold a follow-up to last year’s successful straight out event, aptly named FarFunGlide. Last year as you will recall, a group of intrepid pilots and their crew’s set off on a straight out task of Boulder to Albert Lea, MN. The winner, John Seaborn, made Ogallalla, Nebraska, for 196 miles, which was a long way for that day’s weather. This year’s event, FastFunGlide, has a less lofty goal - fly to Sidney, NE (140 miles) just in time for the Memorial weekend SSB Camp. The pilot with the best speed wins. All gliders will be handicapped using club class rules so all are competitive. Sign up with John Seaborn or Doug Weibel in advance.
If demand warrants we will try and have two SSB tow planes active for the launch at Boulder. Possibly one can accompany the participants on their way to Sidney as well. You will still need a crew so make an effort to recruit someone, perhaps someone going to the Sidney camp who is not towing a glider.
You may be creative. For example, if you are able to make Sidney, you can stay over and Saturday morning, as the towplane will be there for the camp, (hopefully) fly back to Boulder. Many other possibilities come to mind. For the optimistic crowd, we will arrange transportation for your overnight bag, so that if all goes well your crew can stay home, but a crew willing to retrieve you is still necessary. The organizers will not be responsible for your retrieve. We definitely want to keep the format as a fun one-day event. The rules are simple. Starts can be done at any time 10 minutes after the last launch. If you have a GPS the start cylinder will be 3 miles around Boulder and a one mile finish radius. Launch order will be done using a lottery. All times will be handicapped using the sports class handicaps so all gliders are competitive. No water ballast will be allowed.
If the weather is not cooperative, then the day will be scrubbed and it’s off to Sidney via trailer.
