New SSB Barograph/GPS Data Logger

ew.jpg (10714 bytes)A former SSB member, Robert Anderson, has donated an EW barograph to the SSB. We have had it upgraded, so that, in addition to being an easy to use 40,000 foot barograph, it can also be used in conjunction with many Garmin GPS units as an approved flight data recorder for badge and record flights. It is much easier to use than the old photographic technique. You just use your GPS to make sure that you fly through the correct turnpoint sector, and the flight recorder brings back the evidence that you did! We also have the software for you and/or the Official Observer to use to download and evaluate the flight trace and to make copies to send in with badge claims.

Because we have lost two of our three previous Replogle Barographs, which were kept in the SSB Shack, the new EW flight recorder (EWFR) will be kept by Rod Smythe (303-939-0201), and will be checked in and out by him. He will also be happy to provide instruction in its use, user manuals, copies of the software, help with downloading flights, etc. Our EWFR is valid for badge and record flights when used with the following Garmin GPS units: GPS 12, 12XL, 80-Mil, 89, 90, 92, 95, 55 (with software version 1.12 or later), GPS II, II plus, III, and III pilot. However, it doesn’t need a GPS unit to be used as a barograph, and it is currently calibrated, so it is ready for your next attempt for a three Lennie pin. Don’t wait for a badge attempt to play with our new toy, give Rod a call and play with it now!

Check out the EW web site for even more information.

Winter Barograph Donated

Local soaring pioneer, Lou Feierabend, has very generously donated an excellent winter barograph the Society. This is the barograph that Lou used to achieve his diamonds and is an excellent instrument for recording high altitude flights. See Rod Smythe for the details.
