General Camp Info

If you haven’t flown from Salida, you’re in for a real treat. The soaring can be spectacular and the views from the cockpit are hard to beat—it is spectacular mountain soaring.

Located at the North end of the Sangre De Cristo Range, near the Arkansas River and in the shadow of Mt. Shavano, Salida offers access to scenic local flights, as well as cross-country soaring along the rugged Sangre De Cristo's to the South and access to Aspen or Vail in the North. Mountain flights of 500K+ are common.

Beyond excellent soaring, there are lots of things for non-pilots to do.  Hot springs, fishing, rafting, hiking, antiques and art galleries, good music and good food top the list.  Accommodations range from posh B&B’s to car camping at the airport.

See the camp guidelines for logistics of tow lists and other procedures.

Airport Info

NOTE: New Airport ID (KANK) and AWOS (133.85 / 719-539-5268)

There is a 7347 x 75 ft. runway, but at 7523 ft. msl., density altitude can get VERY high on a hot day.  Keep in mind that elevator and aileron control may begin to diminish at much higher ground speeds. And plan for the possibility of strong downdrafts when landing on rwy. 24.

For detailed airport information, see:  http://www.airnav.com/airport/KANK
